As part of our bespoke development project, 5 Limes have developed a windows service which successfully integrates into SharePoint to provide file system updates and file monitoring. This integration was required in order to meet a business requirement of the client storing a large number of files within a network drive.
Files within the drive were stored in folders which corresponded to a particular job number within the SharePoint application. Updates can be made to the documents in either location and changes are periodically synchronised based on the Last Modified Date. An automatic synchronisation of documents within the drive is performed by the File System Monitor at the end of each day.
The functionality provided by this windows service meant that the client could access the shared drive from within SharePoint and associate files, such as emails, with a particular job within SharePoint. Tracking of changes to files and conflict control for administration purposes was included as part of the functionality.
